You do not want to have too much or too bright of lighting either. One or two ceiling fixtures depending upon the size of the room and lamps are the perfect mix.

it is a great idea to have seating of different heights and firmness available to accommodate guests in various stages of life and physical abilities. A squishy sofa is always great to kick off your shoes and get comfy. You may also want a firm upright chair that is easy for anyone to get in and out of. 

It is also good to have seating that faces other seating so it is easy and natural to sit and relax and have a conversation with your guests. You also want to make sure that if the room is large seating is closer together so you do not have to shout across the room. 

A cozy and inviting living room extends your space for entertaining and gives you more options beyond the dinner party or always feeling like you need to provide a meal to invite someone over.
