Perceptive Questions to Ask Neighbors and Gain Foresight about an Omaha NeighborhoodEven if an Omaha neighborhood is the most popular and homes there are in high demand, you might not like living there. Just as important as the home you buy is the neighborhood surrounding it. You don't want to purchase a beautiful Omaha home only to end up with buyer's remorse because you don't like the location. One of the important aspects of buying an Omaha home is making sure you know the neighborhood as well as possible.

It can be difficult to get an accurate feel for a neighborhood especially if you are new to Omaha or just the area of Omaha that you are considering a move to. There are ways to look up facts about a neighborhood online but this method may not always give you the clearest insight about truly living in an area. One of the best ways to gain some useful knowledge about a neighborhood is to talk with the neighbors.

So if you are looking at a home in Omaha you are interested in buying and happen to see some neighbors outside, take a minute to approach them and ask if they would be willing to answer a few questions about the neighborhood. After of course introducing yourself and telling them why you are asking.

Here are some good questions to ask neighbors about a neighborhood

How do you enjoy living in this neighborhood and how would you describe living in the area?

This is a great question that allows someone to give their personal opinion and insight about the neighborhood. This is the only way to gain honest opinions about an area. A neighbor is not obligated to a code of ethics like your real estate agent is and can be as honest and truthful about their personal viewpoint of the neighborhood.

When asking this question it is good to have in mind that people all have differing opinions and asking this particular question of several different people will help you to gather viewpoints from different angles to help you get a well-balanced perspective.

What about the schools in the area? Do specific schools have a reputation as being the best or the worst?

Even if you do not have children the culture surrounding the local schools can tell a lot about the culture of the community. Good schools can also give insight into property values in an area and the possibility of making an investment in a property that will retain its value.

If you do have children or plan to begin a family in the near future it is good to ask about the school system and ask specific questions about programs that might interest you or that currently interest your children. Enrolling children in a school with specific programs that they are looking forward to or already utilize is valuable.

What would you change about the neighborhood?

Sometimes when you meet people for the first time they can be reluctant to say negative or disparaging things. Not everyone but many people may refrain from giving their all-out honest opinion right away. This question can help open up their thoughts about any of the drawbacks that the neighborhood may have. It might even get them talking about insights of other neighbors living on the street you would never learn about otherwise. For example, they might say they really love the property but there are some barking dogs three houses down that can get frustrating.

What do they know about the property you are interested in? Is there anything they feel you should be aware of?

Once you have asked about the overall neighborhood it can be good to steer attention toward the actual home you were interested in. They might give a different perspective than the current homeowner has about the home itself. They might even be able to go back to previous owners before the current ones and give more insight about the property from when other people owned it.

What is this social scene like? Do people get together with one another?

It is not uncommon for hopeful Omaha homebuyers to want a neighborhood that is established and has the possibility of getting to know people who live close by. If you are hoping to have backyard barbecues or neighborhood holiday parties this is a great way to get a feel for the possibility of that happening. It is also a good question to ask to help gain some insight into the personalities of the people around you and help you decide if you might see yourself fitting in among them.

Real estate agents are a wealth of knowledge and are crucial to your Omaha homebuying process but they are only able to share so much information about a property. Asking neighbors gives you a helpful and truthful insight about an area from the people who are there every day.
